Morgantown man hit a county vehicle and fled the scene

A Morgantown man was issued a summons to appear in court after he hit a county highway department vehicle with his moped and fled the scene.

Bobbie J. Westmoreland, 63, was issued the summons to appear in court after he hit a Johnson County Highway Department vehicle and left the scene about 11:18 a.m. Wednesday.

The crash caused scratches to the county’s vehicle, according to an accident report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

A Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputy was called to the intersection of County Road 400W and County Road 250N in Bargersville.

A family member of Westmoreland returned to the scene of the crash with his moped and told police that Westmoreland called him from a restaurant in Bargersville and asked him to pick him up because he was hurt, according to the report.

A highway department employee told police that Westmoreland hit the county’s 2016 Ford truck that was parked near the intersection. Hazard cones were set up at the intersection and the truck’s flashers were engaged. The sheriff’s deputy saw a piece of the moped and Westmoreland’s hat near the truck, the report said.

Police found Westmoreland at his home and he told them that he was traveling north on County Road 400W, came over a hill and did not see the truck. He said he "messed up" when he went to a Bargersville restaurant instead of calling police, according to the report.

Westmoreland was taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash and was issued a summons to appear in court for leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.
