High school football: Week 10 previews

Class 4A

Greenwood (3-6) at Madison (1-8)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: woodmenbroadcasting.com

Recent history: The teams have not met since 1986, when current Woodmen coach Mike Campbell was in middle school.

Sagarin ratings: Greenwood 59.34 (94th in Indiana), Madison 13.94 (271st)

Players to watch: Greenwood — QB Oliver Rau, WR Bryce Hoffman, OL/DL Scott Sledge, LB Joe Bassler, DB Tanner Allen; Madison — QB Parker Jones, RB Trenton Barnes, WR DB Louis Humes, LB Noah Caswell, LB Curtis Jacobs

What to look for: A much-needed respite for the Woodmen, who have been decimated by injuries in recent weeks. After struggling through the heftiest portion of its conference schedule the last three weeks, the Cubs should offer little resistance by comparison. Even with top running back Ethan Haessig lost to a season-ending shoulder injury, Greenwood should have enough to get comfortably through to next week.

Frankfort (0-9) at Roncalli (4-5)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: rebelmedianetwork.com (audio only; video available on Roncalli’s YouTube and Facebook pages)

Recent history: The lone previous meeting between the schools came in 2015, when Roncalli rolled to a 28-0 sectional victory.

Sagarin ratings: Frankfort 2.58 (301st), Roncalli 69.89 (61st)

Players to watch: Frankfort — QB Sam Michael, WR Jade Ayers, WR Cam Swinford, LB Ethan Cook; Roncalli — QB Aidan Leffler, RB Baron Huebler, WR Kyle Lockard, WR Ryan Papandria, DE Jack Wardzala

What to look for: A lot of playing time for the Rebels’ second and third units. After finding its stride on the back half of a difficult regular-season schedule, Roncalli figures to devour the Hot Dogs, who have lost 20 straight and 34 of their last 35 games. Frankfort was shut out four times so far this fall; even if the Rebels call off the dogs early, tonight could well be the fifth.

Class 3A

Indian Creek (7-2) at West Vigo (5-4)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Recent history: This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Sagarin ratings: West Vigo 32.46 (209th), Indian Creek 54.35 (116th)

Players to watch: West Vigo — QB/DE Dane Andrews, RB/DB Zander Wilbur, WR Kaleb Hannahs, WR Shea Andrews, WR/DB Brandon Stroud; Indian Creek — QB Roman Purcell, RB Connor Fruits, WR/DB Jordan Gorham, LB James Kelly, LB Tyler Ross

What to look for: The Braves just beat the top team in the WIC’s Western Division, so facing the fifth-place team shouldn’t be too difficult. The backfield duo of Purcell and Fruits has been too much for opposing defenses to handle so far, and there’s little reason to think that the Vikings will be the ones to find a solution. With a much more difficult game on tap next week against either Danville or Tri-West, the most important thing for Indian Creek this week will be avoiding injuries.

Class A

Indiana School for the Deaf (3-3) at Edinburgh (1-8)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Recent history: The Lancers have won the last three meetings in this series, which has been dormant since 2011.

Sagarin ratings: Indiana Deaf minus-7.70 (311th), Edinburgh minus-2.58 (306th)

Players to watch: Indiana Deaf — QB/DB Jerrell Edwards, RB/LB Sabu Middlebrook, WR/LB Tyler Wascher; Edinburgh — QB/DB Riley Palmeter, RB/LB Austin Streeval, WR/DB Darius Bennett, WR/DB Caleb Dewey, WR/DB Lennon DeLoach

What to look for: In a week otherwise devoid of competitive matchups locally, this could be the most compelling game to watch. It could also mean some history for the Lancers, who have never won sectional games in back-to-back seasons. If they can pick up the victory on the road this week, they’ll come home and play just their second November football game in the last 27 years. Edinburgh’s offense has scored 52 points the last two weeks after totaling 60 in its first seven games.
