Cross country

Grizzly Cub girls score big win

Franklin’s girls, unranked in the state preseason poll, opened the season with a convincing victory at the Valley Cross Kickoff in Terre Haute on Saturday morning. The Grizzly Cubs were led by the trio of Lauren Klem (20:02), Lillian Lacy (20:10) and Jenna Newton (20:28), who finished sixth, seventh and eighth overall, respectively.

Sydney Clements was 25th and Sydney Woodward 34th for Franklin. The Grizzly Cub boys finished 17th in the 28-team field.

Trojan boys dominate opener

Sixth-ranked Center Grove swept the top four spots in an unscored meet against Columbus North and Bloomington South at Eagle Park in Nashville. Drew Costelow, Jarret Rockwell, Parker Mimbela and Raef Sauer led the way for the Trojans.

On the girls side, the Trojans were narrowly defeated by the eighth-ranked Panthers.

Volleyball

Lancers finish fifth

Edinburgh won two of its first three matches under new coach Jamie Turner on Saturday morning en route to a fifth-place finish in the Morristown Volleyball Classic.

The Lancers (2-1) defeated Northeastern 25-21, 26-24 to start the day before falling to Rising Sun in their second match. The team then rallied to beat Tri in the fifth-place match, 18-25, 25-16, 15-8.

Trojans lose to defending champs

Class 4A No. 5 Center Grove lost its season opener at No. 2 New Castle on Saturday, 25-20, 25-13, 30-28. Avery Holubar led the Trojans with 11 kills, while Jenna Otto dished out 25 assists.

Woodmen fall in four

Opening against a very strong Mt. Vernon team, Greenwood took the opening game before suffering a four-set defeat, 20-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-20.

Rebels sweep Flashes

Roncalli made quick work of Franklin Central in its opener, 25-12, 25-11, 25-23. Sarah Lezon and Erica Eads had eight and seven kills, respectively.

Boys tennis

Woodmen top Pioneers

Greenwood swept all three singles points to begin its season with a 3-2 home win over Mooresville. Ethan Gray, Nick Belovic and Charlie Brooks each won his match in straight sets, with the three dropping just one game between them.

Trojans, Rebels tie

Center Grove opened the season with a 2-2 tie against Roncalli on Saturday. Aaron McDaniel and Ethan McGee found the back of the net for the Trojans.

Girls golf

Host Grizzly Cubs win

Ninth-ranked Franklin rolled to victory at the Lady Cub Invitational on Saturday. The Grizzly Cubs were led by Ellie Beavins with a round of 73, followed by Liv Parramore (76), Ava Ray (79) and Kara Heuchan (83).

Trojans third at Zionsville tourney

Lanie DeHaven’s 77 led the way for Center Grove on the way to a third-place finish at the Zionsville Invitational. The fifth-ranked Trojans also got an 81 from Sage Parsetich and an 85 from Meg Fosnot.

Guilfoy sets new career best

Greenwood’s Maura Guilfoy shot a career-low score of 76 at the Ben Davis Invitational on Saturday, placing third among all individual players. The Woodmen finished 10th as a team with a score of 402.
