Letter: Thank you, Johnson County, for successful hog roast

To the editor:

The Franklin Rotary Club is very grateful for the enormous community support and charitable giving at this year’s Jim Rhoades Memorial Hog Roast. More than $40,000 in donations will be shared equally between the Interchurch Food Pantry and the Good Cheer Fund to aid food insecurity in our county.

A huge thanks to:

  • Malones Catering for their donation and preparation of the delicious food; this event would be impossible without you.
  • The Johnson County Fair Board for allowing the use of Scott Hall and the grounds.
  • Indian Creek High School’s Future Farmers of America program for their ever-popular pork chops.
  • The Daily Journal for their wonderful articles and media coverage of the event.

This years event, like many others in 2020, had to be adapted to a drive-through only. We did not know what kind of turnout to expect. We were amazed at how the community responded! We ran out of food in a little more than an hour serving more than 800 meals. With the food gone, the donations just kept coming. For more than an hour after we were done serving, donations were still being received. With all the negative we see daily in the world, it was uplifting to witness the community response that day.

Also, special thanks to members Eric Leugers and Tony Daily who were the event planners this year. Their guidance and organization was a big reason we surpassed our fundraising goal. More than 30 Franklin Rotary members volunteered, exemplifying our motto "Service above Self." Lastly, we would like to thank everyone who was able to make a donation. Johnson County is truly the best place to live, work, learn and play. We look forward to seeing everyone next year on Dec. 2 for lunch at the fairgrounds.
