Letter to Editor: Reader, crime victim supports Hamner for prosecutor

To the Editor:

On Saturday, October 4, 1997, I began the day as I would any other day: a wife, a mother of two wonderful boys, a college student, a sister, a childcare provider, but by 11:00 p.m., I became something that I never thought I would ever be. I instantly became known as the sister of Steven Thomas Stapleton, the man murdered at Don’s Guns.

The above sad life-changing circumstances led our case to Johnson County Prosecutor Lance Hamner. Lance’s dedication to Steven’s case and the judicial system was evident from the first day we met. My knowledge of the judicial system was minimal and facing the court system ahead was a daunting experience, but Lance was there every step of the way.

Anytime I had questions, concerns, or just needed to talk for clarity or my sanity, I knew I could call the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office and talk to Lance as soon as he was available. He met with me more times than I can remember to explain the legal processes to me in layman’s terms. For that, I am forever grateful.

Lance made sure my brother was referred to as Steven, the name given to him by my parents, and not a just a case number.

I still remember the prosecution’s closing arguments and Lance saying about the killer whose lawyer argued that he should have leniency because he was an abused child. Lance told me felt sorry for the little boy who endured horrible abuse at the hands of his father. However, he was then an adult and must take responsibility for murdering Steven. The killer was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. The killer recently died in prison where he belonged.

During the long process of the criminal justice system, Lance always made us feel comfortable and at ease, like talking to an old friend. He has continued to reach out to my family over the years, sending my mom a card every year for over 20 years, and being available to answer questions when our family received communication from the correctional system.

Steven’s life mattered. Lance made sure all parties involved understood this and knew it too. I thank God every day that our case was in Johnson County because Lance Hamner was an angel during the most horrific time in my life.
