Royals roll to regional title

Keagan Rothrock struck out 15 batters and helped her own cause with a home run as Class 4A No. 1 Roncalli earned a 5-0 regional win at Avon Tuesday evening. Lyla Blackwell had three hits, scored twice and set a new single-season stolen base record for the Royals (30-0), while Abbey Hofmann matched Rothrock with a pair of runs batted in.

Roncalli will face No. 7 Pendleton Heights in a semifinal game at the Bedford North Lawrence Semistate on Saturday morning.

Boys golf

Franklin earns Mid-State crown

Led by a 75 from Kadin Gibson, Franklin successfully defended its Mid-State Conference championship at Heartland Crossing on Tuesday. The Grizzly Cubs, who also got rounds of 79 from Will McGuinness and Reid Davidson as well as an 81 from Luke Bechert, finished with a team total of 314 to defeat Greenwood by nine strokes.

Lancers split three-way

Edinburgh finished second in a three-way match against Southwestern and Oldenburg Academy. Max Blandford earned medalist honors with a round of 41. Trevor Moon (51), Cash Cunningham (52) and Wyatt Burton (53) rounded out the scoring for the Lancers.

Grizzly Cubs promote Armstrong

Mike Armstrong, a longtime head coach at Perry Meridian who spent the last two seasons as a Franklin assistant, was named the new head coach of the Grizzly Cubs late Tuesday afternoon. Armstrong won 427 games in 34 seasons with the Falcons, winning six sectional championships and reaching the state final in 2003. He has also had various assistant coaching roles with USA Basketball.

He replaces Josh Sabol, who stepped down after advancing to the Class 4A state championship game in his sixth season.
