State Road 135 construction underway again in Trafalgar

After a month-long delay for a fiber utility relocation, the construction project on State Road 135 has resumed.

The Zayo and Windstream fiber lines that were in conflict with the structure replacement project north of Trafalgar were relocated on Sept. 1 and work has now resumed, Natalie Garrett, an Indiana Department of Transportation spokesperson, said Tuesday.

The $2 million construction project was undertaken to replace a structure on State Road 135 1.23 miles north of State Road 252 in Trafalgar. The road was originally expected to be closed for June and July only.

The decision to close the road at the time was made by the contractor based on the most current utility relocation plans and timelines provided to INDOT at that time, Garrett said.

“Utilities were initially expected to be moved in early July. Until that point, the contractor was able to complete demolition and preparation work on the structure replacement project. Unfortunately, INDOT has no control over relocation plans and/or schedules set by utility companies,” Garrett said.

With utilities now relocated, the project is expected to be wrapped up in approximately six weeks, she said.

The official, or signed, detour route follows State Road 252, U.S. 31, State Road 144 and State Road 44. There is also an unofficial local detour agreement INDOT has reached with the Town of Trafalgar and Johnson County. The unofficial detour follows Pearl Street, County Road 400 South, County Road 350 West and County Road 300 South.
