Mary Eleanor (Hicks) Baker

FRANKLIN

Mary (Hicks) Baker 83, passed away on December 25, 2022. Mary was born on December 6, 1939 to John B. and Beatrice Hicks.

She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, K. Allen Baker and three children: Pam Baker, Indianapolis; Robert Baker, Fort Lauderdale, FL; and Ann-Marie (Larry) Rohe, Fishers, IN. Mary was also the devoted grandmother of five grandchildren: Kyle Vawter, Lia Vawter, Mallory Rohe, Dylan Rohe and Carlie Rohe.

She is preceded in death by her mother Beatrice Hicks, father John B. Hicks, and brother John W. Hicks.

After graduating from Clark High School in Johnson County, IN, Mary earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from University of Indianapolis and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Her nursing career spanned employment in several areas including Visiting Nurse Services, Roudebush V.A. Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, and Community Hospital East, where she retired in 2001.

Mary also completed formal education to become a Parish Nurse and served members of her church, St. John’s United Church of Christ in Indianapolis, prior to her retirement. Mary was always interested in history, and served as a docent for the Benjamin Harrison Home as well as volunteered at the Johnson County Historical Museum.

She was an avid reader and belonged to several book clubs. She loved dancing, card games, gardening and traveling – particularly cruising. After retirement, Mary and Allen spent winters in Fort Myers, FL for 15 years.

A celebration of life will be held at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 7031 South East Street, Indianapolis at 12pm on Friday, December 30th, 2022, with a visitation from 10am – 12pm prior to the service.
