Geneva J. Vandivier-Key-Ray, age 103 passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, March 21, 2023 at her home in Trafalgar.

She was born on December 15, 1919 in Johnson County to her parents, the late Vern and Florence (Parkhurst) Vandivier. Geneva was a 1937 graduate of Union High School. She became a nurse’s aid and worked at Camp Atterbury, where she met her husband, James Marshall Key and they were married November 22, 1944. He preceded her in death in 1978 after 33 loving years of marriage. Geneva later met and married Joseph Albert Ray Jr. on January 29, 1984 in Franklin. He also preceded her in death in 2005 after 21 loving years of marriage.

Geneva worked as a Nurse’s Aide for Johnson Memorial Hospital for over 30 years. She was a faithful 90+ year member of the Christian Chapel Church in Morgantown, where she was baptized at the age of 12. In church, she was part of the Christian Chapel Ladies Aid, and would help create beautiful quilts for new brides. She belonged to the Good Sams Camping Club and to the Nineveh & Franklin Senior Centers where she would play cards, crochet and craft with plastic canvas. Geneva and her husband, Joseph were involved with the Red Hot Swingers and Bachelor & Bachelorette Square dancing clubs. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling throughout the United States to square dance with other groups. Most of all, Geneva loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be remembered most for her love of gardening, love of family and unyielding faith in God.

Geneva is survived by her children, Larry D. (Lora) Key of Martinsville, Marshall W. Key, Janet (Larry) Vanzant and Michael (Bonda) Key all of Trafalgar; grandchildren: Bryan Key, Sherrie (John) Martin, Susan (Arden) Bush, Shelly (Tony) Woodall, Lisa (Rodney) Nevins, Amy (Brad) Payton, Donna Rector and Curtis Wood; 20 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband James Marshall Key, 2nd husband Joseph Albert Ray Jr., infant daughter Elizabeth Ann Key, granddaughter Teresa Vanzant and brother Meredith Vandivier.

A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at First Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Franklin.
