College notebook: Traylor named league’s top freshman

Radford women’s basketball player Ashlyn Traylor became the fourth player in program history to be named the Big South Conference Freshman of the Year.

The former Franklin guard, a seven-time freshman of the week selection, led the Highlanders in scoring (13.4 points per game), assists (3.2) and steals (2.1), and was second in rebounds (5.9).

Freshman guard Kuryn Brunson scored six points off the bench for Wabash Valley College in its 82-77 loss to Eastern Florida State College in a quarterfinal game at the NJCAA Division I women’s basketball tournament.

Franklin College men’s track and field athletes Eli Cochrane, Brayden Devenport and Wyatt McCullough have been named to the HCAC All-Academic team.

Butler golfer Damon Dickey scored a three-round total of 218 as the Bulldogs were second of 11 teams at the Don Benbow Butler Spring Invitational.

University of Indianapolis freshman Ava Ray tied for 16th place individually with a two-round score of 152 to help the Greyhounds place second of 11 teams competing in The Julie at Northern Kentucky.

Senior Javan Johnson took 13th individually for Taylor men’s golf with a three-round score of 228 as the Trojans placed second of 17 teams at the Gard Championship.

Center Grove

Franklin College junior swimmer John Hasquin was named to the HCAC All-Academic team.

Grace College women’s golf opened its spring season by winning the four-team Spring Tiger Invite, as senior Lucy Young took fifth individually with a score of 86.

The Northwestern softball team completed a three-game sweep against visiting Minnesota with senior catcher Jordyn Rudd contributing three hits, including two doubles, and driving in four runs.

Southern Indiana lost at Southeast Missouri State, 8-5, with first baseman Lexi Fair contributing a single.

Indiana second baseman Tyler Cerny homered and doubled as the Hoosier baseball squad topped visiting Ohio State, 14-6, in the opener of a three-game series. The freshman followed with two singles in a 9-6 IU victory, and an RBI single in a 4-3 decision over Kent State.

Sophomore pitcher Drue Young gave up seven hits and struck out seven in five innings for Indiana Wesleyan in its 8-4 loss to visiting St. Francis.

Morehead State junior Grant Herron helped his team win at Southern Indiana, 11-4. The pitcher was on the hill the first 5 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits and striking out five.

Junior Anthony Smith had a two-run single for Franklin College baseball in its 14-7 win at Transylvania. Senior Jackson Young was the starting pitcher for the Grizzlies, improving to 3-0 on the season after working seven innings, allowing seven hits and striking out 10.

Mike Wyman singled three times and drove in a run to help St. Leo defeat visiting Florida Southern, 7-6, in 11 innings.

Senior Trey Thixton won matches at No. 1 doubles and No. 5 singles, but Indiana Wesleyan men’s tennis lost a 4-2 decision at Holy Cross.

Greenwood

Franklin College senior diver Faith Jackson and indoor track competitor Nick Patton were both among the athletes honored as part of the HCAC All-Academic team.

Senior catcher Lexy Rees homered and singled for Undy softball in a 9-1 victory at Illinois-Springfield, while junior Dominique Proctor had a double and single. Proctor hit a home run and Rees singled three times in a 4-1 defeat of Lewis.

Indiana Wesleyan men’s tennis player Ethan Gray won his No. 4 singles match, and lost at No. 2 doubles, in a loss at Holy Cross.

Indian Creek

Freshman golfer Braxton Christie led Franklin College by tying for 54th place individually at Butler’s spring invitational with a three-round total of 222.

Butler freshman Emily Todor scored a run as the softball team won at Providence, 7-1, and another in 9-1 loss at Indiana.

Whiteland

Franklin College junior men’s golfer Zach Ricketts fired a final-round 70 in an invitational at Butler, and a 233 overall to tie for 56th among individuals.

Franklin College senior guard Libby Baker was named to the HCAC All-Academic women’s basketball team.

Morehead State senior pitcher Luke Helton got the start in a 5-1 win at Southern Indiana, giving up two hits and striking out five in his 6 2/3 innings.
