EDINBURGH

Matson Bryan Martin was born on July 31, 1979, and died on August 7, 2023.

Matson grew up on the Franklin College campus with his brother Evan. He attended Webb School, Custer Baker Middle School and Franklin Community High School, graduating in 1997. He enjoyed music, drama and in-line skating. While in high school Matson went on a student trip to Spain and spent time in England on a student exchange program. Matson went to Whittier College for two years, lived in California and Arizona and returned to Franklin. In 2008 he was instrumental in taking care of his father after a devastating automobile accident.

Matson struggled with diabetes, depression, and alcohol abuse. Despite this, he worked in logistics facilities, as a bartender, in the health care field with special needs patients, as a cook at a retirement center and most recently as a cook at a manufacturing plant in Columbus.

Matson maintained his friendships with high school and college classmates throughout his life. He loved music and telling jokes. He enjoyed camping with his friends. He played golf and enjoyed kayaking. He volunteered several times at Patch Adam’s Hospital in West Virginia. Matson loved running through Edinburgh, especially in the cemetery. He was gregarious, generous and caring.

Matson’s family stuck by him throughout his life. He is survived by his mother and father, Margo and Bill Martin of Santa Fe, New Mexico, his brother Evan Martin of McMinnville, Oregon, his sister Chanley Martin Davis of Williamsburg, VA and his niece Morgan Davis of Williamsburg, VA. He is survived by his aunts, Ann Burge (Louisville, KY), Ceil Matson (Tucson, AZ), Sarah Matson (Denver, CO) and Katy Ailstock (Portland, OR).
