FRST, CGAC win titles at Age Group State

Franklin Regional Swim Team and Center Grove Aquatic Club both claimed event wins and overall top-10 finishes at the Indiana Swimming Short Course Age Group Championships, which concluded Sunday night at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Trevor Smith of FRST was the high local point scorer, placing in the top three of all six of his individual events in the 11-12 boys division. Smith finished first in the 50-yard freestyle, second in the 500 free and 100 backstroke and third in the 50 back and both the 100 and 200 free. He also teamed with Cooper Finney, Deuce Callaway and Quinn Zarse on a pair of top-five relays. FRST placed ninth as a team with 458 points.

CGAC was 10th with 453 points, largely on the strength of its relay teams. The 13-14 boys quartet of Moses Weaver, Matthew Cuadros, Camron Mazdai and Zac Groninger earned a win in the 200 medley relay and was third in the 400 medley as well as both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Cuadros added an individual runner-up finish in the 13-14 100 breaststroke.

The Greenwood Gators, 34th with 73 points, got a second-place finish from Elyza Tschopp in the girls 11-12 200 freestyle, while Indian Creek Swim Club (42nd with 37.5 points) got a fourth-place effort in the 10 and under 200 individual medley from Ella Hines.

Warriors fourth at Monrovia tourney

Whiteland split four matches at the Monrovia Madness tournament on Saturday, placing fourth out of eight teams at the event. The Warriors (4-2) swept two-setters against Mooresville and Crawfordsville but lost against the host Bulldogs and Lawrence North.

Softball earns walk-off victory

Ruth Kaiser scored on an RBI groundout by Hadley Fuhrman in the bottom of the ninth, giving Franklin College a 7-6 win over Aurora to salvage a split of Sunday’s doubleheader. Molly Wallace added a two-run homer in the victory for the Grizzlies (9-3), who also split a Saturday twinbill with Kalamazoo.

Baseball routs Thunder to cap sweep

A 10-run second inning helped Franklin College finish off a three-game sweep of Trine with an 18-3 home win on Sunday. Tysen Lipscomb, Sean Sullivan and Andrew Wallace all homered for the Grizzlies (9-4), with Lipscomb driving in a team-high five runs. Indian Creek grad Dylan Sprong earned the victory on the mound.

Men’s golf places sixth

Franklin College battled a tough field at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate in Terre Haute, ending the weekend in sixth place with a team total of 607. Carter Giggy led the way for the Grizzlies with a 74-74—148, good for a seventh-place individual finish, while Jacob Paine (150) tied for 13th and Zach Ricketts (153) tied for 22nd.

Track and field opens outdoor season

Competing in its first outdoor meet of the spring, Franklin College was fifth among women’s teams and sixth on the men’s side at the Rose-Hulman Early Bird on Saturday. Sarah O’Day was second in the women’s 100-meter dash, while the Grizzly men got a runner-up finish in the 4×400 relay from the team of Steven Scott, Luke Paddock, Logan McIntosh and Eli Cochrane.
