College notebook: Helton off to fast start for Morehead State baseball

Morehead State pitcher Luke Helton improved to 4-1 on the season with a 12-2 victory over visiting Eastern Michigan.

The senior, a Whiteland graduate, pitched all eight innings, allowing three hits, yielding one walk and striking out nine batters.

Whiteland

Sophomore pitcher Debbie Hill worked two innings of relief for Trine softball in 13-5 defeat of Wartburg, allowing three hits and striking out two. She picked up the pitching win and delivered a two-run home run in the team’s 9-1 win over DePauw. She then hit a three-run homer as Trine won at Hanover, 14-5.

Franklin College senior Zach Ricketts shot scores of 75 and 78 as the men’s golf team placed sixth of 13 teams at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate.

Lipscomb’s Bella Jackson placed 15th in the 100-meter hurdles, running a time of 15.22 seconds, as the Bison competed in the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech.

Center Grove

Indiana shortstop Tyler Cerny doubled in the baseball team’s 9-3 home loss to Belmont, and homered and singled as the Hoosiers responded a day later with a 15-10 win. The sophomore then singled, doubled, homered and drove in four runs as IU scored a 15-7 victory to wrap up the series.

Senior Bryce Eblin singled for Alabama baseball in its 11-3 home loss to visiting Tennessee. The Crimson Tide responded with a 6-3 win, with Eblin delivering a triple and scoring a run. Eblin singled again as Alabama wrapped up the series with a 7-6 win.

Senior catcher Adam Taylor helped Franklin College win all three games against visiting Trine, getting two hits and scoring three runs in his two starts.

First baseman Lexi Fair had a total of five hits, including a double, and six runs driven in as Southern Indiana softball won all three games against visiting Morehead State.

Senior third baseman Kaci Finchum singled two for Mount St. Joseph softball in its 3-2 win over Wisconsin Lutheran.

Bentley guard Ella Thompson wrapped up her college basketball career, scoring six points and distributing three assists in a 68-50 loss to Jefferson in a Division II East Regional semifinal. Thompson finished her 118-game career with 1,282 points — 20th all-time among women’s players at Bentley.

Vermont women’s basketball lost at Maine, 64-48, in the title game of the America East Conference tournament. Senior guard Emma Utterback was named to the all-tourney team for a third consecutive season.

Freshman guard Marcus Ankney scored five points, had three assists and two rebounds as Indiana Wesleyan downed Columbia (Missouri), 105-99 at the NAIA national men’s basketball tournament. He finished with six rebounds, six boards and five assists in a 92-81 defeat of Tennessee Southern.

Indian Creek

Spring Arbor women’s basketball finished with a 24-8 record, losing to Dordt 87-67 in the second round of the NAIA national championships. Freshman guard Abby Fleetwood had six points, three rebounds and three assists in the loss.

Franklin College senior pitcher Dylan Sprong picked up the win in the baseball team’s 18-3 victory over visiting Trine, working five innings, allowing four hits and striking out three.

Sophomore Braxton Christie tied for 43rd place individually, shooting scores of 78 and 79, as Franklin College finished sixth of 13 teams at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate.

University of Indianapolis women’s golf placed second at the Findlay Spring Invite, with sophomore Ava Ray tied for 49th place individually.

Senior Eli Cochrane helped the Franklin College men’s 4×400 relay team place second at the Rose-Hulman Early Bird track and field meet in 3:29.07.

Greenwood

Senior catcher Lexy Rees and shortstop Dominique Proctor each finished with four hits as the UIndy softball team scored doubleheader wins over Southwest Baptist and Drury.

Roncalli

Freshman Keagan Rothrock (Whiteland) pitched a complete game as the Florida softball squad downed Mercer, 10-2. Rothrock struck out 11 batters in her six innings in the circle. She also pitched a complete-game four-hitter in the Gators’ 10-4 victory over Indiana.
