Mistakes help sink Greenwood football

The last time Greenwood’s football team played at Mooresville, an experienced Woodmen squad routed the Pioneers in last year’s Class 4A sectional championship game.

Friday, a much less experienced Greenwood team returned to Mooresville, and a veteran Pioneers group turned the tables on the Woodmen in dominant fashion.

Mooresville’s balanced offensive attack and physical defense built a 28-0 first-half lead, then cruised from there to a 49-14 Mid-State Conference victory. The Pioneers’ win ended a 10-game Greenwood winning streak in the series, which dated to 2010.

“They came out with more fire and more energy than we did, and that’s something we’re still learning to do and we’re going to get better in that regard,” Greenwood coach Mike Campbell said. “We left a couple of touchdowns inside the red zone again, and that’s three in the last two weeks. Some of that is part of the learning process.”
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]Click here to purchase photos from this gallery

The final score would have looked much better if it weren’t for two turnovers that happened tantalizingly close to the goal line. With 8.8 seconds remaining in the first half, the Woodmen drove to the Mooresville 9-yard line after an impressive 35-yard Isaac Turley reception along the left sideline, but the Pioneers intercepted a pass in the end zone on the next play.

Greenwood (1-3, 0-2) began the second half with a 13-play, 79-yard, five-minute drive, but fumbled the ball into the end zone and Mooresville recovered. The Pioneers didn’t score on their next possession, but they held the ball for 7:41 and 18 plays, ending any chance of a Greenwood comeback.

The Woodmen ran for 216 yards, which wasn’t too far off Mooresville’s 259 ground yards. But the Pioneers also passed for 189 yards to Greenwood’s 52, and the Woodmen’s three turnovers cost them 14 likely points given where the turnovers occurred on the field.

“We did some nice things; we just struggle with consistency,” Campbell said. “We had six sophomores playing significant time. They’re playing hard, but nothing teaches you like experience.”

Greenwood’s one-two rushing punch of Nick Willham and Anthony Williams combined for 195 yards. Willham finished with 116 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, while Williams added 79 yards on just 12 carries.

The Woodmen’s first touchdown came on a Luke Raker 17-yard reception from Oliver Rau with 5:07 remaining in the first half.

James Mabry led Mooresville (4-0, 2-0) with 115 rushing yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns. Pioneers quarterback Karson Goodman went 14 of 22 for 189 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target, Jon Eineman, hauled in 10 passes for 162 yards and both of Goodman’s touchdown passes.
