College notebook: Heffner leads Marian to second-place finish

Marian freshman and Center Grove graduate Brandon Heffner helped the Knights men’s golf squad to runner-up status at the Heritage Hill Collegiate in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, with a two-round score of 80-77—157.

Center Grove

Grace College junior golfer Lucy Young shot 88 as the Lancers kicked off the spring season at the Olivet Nazarene Intercollegiate.

The Southern Indiana softball team recorded two-game sweeps of Truman State and Quincy. Sophomore first baseman Lexi Fair drove in a total of eight runs on seven hits, including five doubles and a home run.

Northwestern catcher Jordyn Rudd helped the Wildcats win all three games against visiting Michigan State, finishing the series with three runs batted in and two scored.

Lexy Rees homered in both games for the University of Indianapolis softball squad as it split a doubleheader at Illinois-Springfield. Teammate Hanna Burris singled in the opener, a 2-1 loss. Rees also singled twice in a 4-1 defeat of Quincy.

Designated hitter Adam Taylor delivered two doubles and stole a base for Franklin College in its 12-2 victory over Trine, and hit two more doubles in the Grizzlies 15-5 win over Williams. Teammate Jackson Young pitched the opening four frames of a 9-8 defeat of St. Olaf. Franklin College later lost a 4-3 decision to St. Olaf, with pitcher Chris Foote taking the loss despite striking out five in four innings of relief.

Freshman pitcher Drue Young took the loss for Indiana Wesleyan in a 5-3 defeat at Grace College. Young pitched the final four frames, allowing a hit and two runs while striking out four.

Alabama second baseman Bryce Eblin singled and doubled for the Alabama baseball team in its 6-2 win at Mississippi State and swatted a three-run homer to lead the Crimson Tide to a 5-4 defeat of South Alabama.

Grant Herron earned the win for Morehead State baseball in a 10-2 win over Murray State, working the first three innings, permitting two hits and fanning seven batters.

Whiteland

Freshman shortstop Macy Cornelius had two hits and scored three runs for Mount St. Joseph softball in a 17-2 victory at Denison. She contributed a pair of singles in a 5-3 win at Wooster.

Senior right fielder Addison Csikos scored two of Franklin College’s runs in the softball team’s 9-1 victory over Olivet. In the second game of the doubleheader, a 13-3 Grizzlies win, sophomore Delanie Gourley pitched the final two innings, recording a pair of strikeouts.

Indiana Wesleyan senior Danielle Munn pitched one inning of one-hit relief as the Wildcats blanked host Huntington, 8-0. Munn pitched the first four frames in a 4-2 loss to Marian, allowing three hits and four runs.

Indian Creek

Marian freshman Luci Woodrum posted times of 2:43.24 in the 800-meter run and 5:32.98 in the 1,500 at the Margaret Simmons Invitational.

Greenwood

Taylor baseball player T.J. Bass drove in four runs with a single and home run as the Trojans won at St. Francis, 13-1, in the first game of a doubleheader.

UIndy softball player Dominique Proctor had a hit in each of the team’s doubleheader games against Illinois-Springfield.

Franklin

Concordia (Wisconsin) senior tennis player Logan Snyder was part of the winning No. 1 doubles tandem as the team downed Wisconsin Lutheran, 7-2.

Vincennes pole vaulter Matt Frazier placed first by going 3.65 meters (12 feet) as the team hosted the Bill Smith Invitational.

Marian senior Sam Barnett finished 11th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.88 seconds at the Margaret Simmons Invitational.

Drew McGaha and Eli Cochrane helped the Franklin College 4×400 relay place second at the Hanover track and field invitational in a time of 3:38.31.

Freshman Damon Dickey tied for 17th individually with a score of 72-73—145 to help Butler men’s golf place second in its own 12-team spring invitational at Highland Golf Club in Indianapolis.

Senior middle hitter Andy Bennett had four kills, two blocks and two digs as Goshen College men’s volleyball scored a 3-0 sweep of Cornerstone. The Maple Leafs completed the regular season with a 20-9 record.
