As I write this, I am home alone without a caring soul in the house. My wife said she wanted to go to Michigan to visit friends. I was opposed to this and was very firm. “Don’t you have friends here? Gas is expensive. So are hotels.” She left yesterday.

When I was a graduate student in the early ’70s in Scotland, my wife and I wanted to visit Ireland. The distance between Glasgow, Scotland, and Dublin, Ireland is roughly the same mileage as between Johnson County and Chicago, so it wasn’t the length of the trip that prevented our visit. And even though we lived on a tight budget, the cost of the trip wasn’t the issue.

This past month, Indiana was bookended by two “thousand-year” floods, coming in St. Louis and eastern Kentucky, in which at least 37 people were killed. This comes on the heels of a July 6 rainfall event in Fort Wayne that yielded 9 inches, as well as a June 13 derecho that snapped hundreds of utility poles.
