“No man is an island” is a familiar quotation of the poet John Donne. But there was more to Donne’s thought than just that phrase. The reading continues in this way: “No man is an island entire of himself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” Perhaps the shortest summary of Donne’s point is that we are all connected and all part of one family — the human family.

The Indiana Senate recently changed a rule related to floor decorum that threatens to shut down debate in the chamber, especially the voice of the minority party.

The holidays are here. Time for good cheer and happy thoughts, even if candy canes and sugar plums cost 7.8% more this year than last.

Giving back to the community through volunteer work is one of the most rewarding opportunities Johnson County Public Library provides.

It is possible, even likely, we are establishing a new holiday tradition this year. For the remaining days until Christmas, Becky and I will be opening each day a door on our Advent calendars. Using history as my guide, and considering how the rest of the family loves to observe periodic rituals, I feel safe in predicting this latest event most surely will be added to our long list of family holiday celebrations.

One of the more challenging aspects for any state’s legislature next year will be how it deals with the effects of inflation. This is one area where an economic model can help; in this case, the simpler the model, the better.
