Warriors top Woodmen in softball sectional

INDIANAPOLIS

With two out and bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning of Monday’s softball sectional game between Whiteland and Greenwood, Warriors freshman second baseman Macy Cornelius delivered a shot deep into left center field.

The ball looked as if it was bound for the outfield grass, but Woodmen senior Samantha DeCastro, running full speed to her right, appeared to get there it time to make what would have been an impressive end to the inning.

The ball glanced off DeCastro’s mitt, clearing the bases and sending Whiteland to a 10-6 victory and a spot in tonight’s 6 p.m. semifinal.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]Click here to purchase photos from this gallery

The Warriors will play the winner of Monday’s second game between Martinsville and sectional host Franklin Central. Due to a 35-minute lightning delay prior to the opener, the first pitch of the nightcap wasn’t until 9:03 p.m.

Whiteland was outhit, 10-5, but took advantage of four Greenwood errors — including three in the Woodmen’s three-run fifth frame.

“I think we pieced together our offense really well,” Warriors coach Katie Mitchell said. “We were patient at the plate, which allowed us to draw some walks and have extra base runners. We took extra bases on some passed balls and overthrows, so I think we were just aggressive altogether offensively. We are excited to move on.”

Greenwood appeared in control midway through the fifth with a 6-3 lead, but Whiteland refused to go away. The Warriors started their rally in the fifth inning with one out on a double by Addison Csikos — the Warriors’ lone extra-base hit of the game.

Fielding blunders by Greenwood brought Csikos home, as well as two of her teammates.

In the sixth, there were two out and nobody on base for Whiteland when sophomore third baseman Delanie Gourley got on base with a bloop single. Csikos hit a single to center to put runners on first and second before senior Lindsey Boltz walked to load the bases.

Greenwood pitcher Tori Stout walked cleanup hitter Madison Margraf, Whiteland’s senior catcher for what amounted to the winning run. Three more scored in Cornelius’ final at-bat to provide the Warriors some breathing room.

Gourley, who pitched the top of the seventh, said she just wanted to keep her team on the offensive despite coming to the plate with two out.

“I’m thinking that if I hit this ball, everyone else is pumped,” Gourley said. “We get very pumped up (playing Greenwood) because we’ve already seen them three times, so we should be confident for the game.”

Four Greenwood players finished the game with two hits, led by a pair of doubles from junior Alexis Rees and a triple and bunt single from senior third baseman Rachel Derf, the Woodmen’s No. 9 hitter. Leadoff hitter DeCastro and sophomore Dominique Proctor produced two singles apiece.
