Indian Creek football routs Brown County

Indian Creek senior running back Avery Welch racked up huge numbers in two and a half quarters of work, but he was more than happy to share the credit with his offensive line.

Welch rushed for 215 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries in a 55-0 rout of visiting Brown County in Friday night’s homecoming game.

“They did their job like they are supposed to do,” said Welch, who had TD runs of 4, 58 and 12 yards. “Our guards and tackles communicated well, which opened up the big holes for me to run through. I give all the credit to my linemen, and everything I do is because of them.”

Indian Creek coach Brett Cooper said both Welch and senior quarterback Isaiah Lacey understand how valuable the offensive line’s play is to the attack.

Lacey contributed touchdown runs of 6, 35 and 77 yards before leaving in the third quarter with his team leading 42-0. Lacey also competed 7 of 9 passes for 133 yards.

“They’re a dynamic tailback and quarterback combination that can run the ball,” Cooper said. “We thought we could win the line of scrimmage and that was a challenge for our kids. The O-line did that and the D-line did as well. The game is always won or lost up front, and we took care of business.”

The Braves (2-2, 2-0 WIC) dominated throughout, rolling up a 35-0 lead at halftime. Brown County (1-3, 0-2) again left without the Brave-Eagle rivalry trophy.

“It’s been here for a while so we’re glad to keep it,” Cooper said.

Indian Creek hasn’t lost to Brown County since 2003.

“We thought if we could contain the big play in the passing game, we weren’t overly worried about their scramble,” Cooper said. “We could live with it; they’re not going to hurt us that way. We just had to stop the big pass play, and our front five took care of it with pressure all night.”

Indian Creek’s final two touchdowns came with the reserves in the final quarter. Aidan Neatherly caught an 11-yard TD pass from Wyatt Rund, and Owen Sego scored on a 66-yard TD run to conclude the scoring.

Brown County quarterback Noah Carter led the Eagles with 58 rushing yards on nine attempts.

Indian Creek’s Bryce Smith and Jordan Gorham each had an interception.
