Betty Jean Wilkerson

Betty Jean (Teeters) Wilkerson, 95, passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at her home in Franklin.

She was born on November 23, 1926 in Martinsville, Indiana to Ernest L. Teeters and Fairy May (Coleman) Teeters. She married George Shaffer Wilkerson on November 14, 1942. Betty lost the love of her life, George, after fifty-eight wonderful years of marriage on June 9, 2001. She is survived by one son, Lennis “Lenny” (Jane) Wilkerson; daughter-in-law, Elaine Wilkerson; one granddaughter, Stephanie Jean Cavosie; one great-granddaughter, Riley (Chris) Hawkins; two great-great-granddaughters, Olivia and Emi Hawkins; and sister, Donna (Tom) Maddox. She was preceded in passing by her parents; sister, Kathleen Teeters; and son, Larry Wilkerson on July 7, 2019.

Betty attended school in Indianapolis, and later in Trafalgar, Indiana.

In her early years, Betty worked for the telephone company and the A &P Grocery Store in Franklin while George was serving his country during World War II. During the Korean War, Betty worked at Camp Atterbury in Johnson County and later worked for L.S. Ayres &Company Department in Accounts Receivable. She retired from Dow Chemical after twenty-five years of dedicated service.

Betty and George enjoyed traveling out west to California to visit her Aunt Harriett and Uncle Ernest Boeckx, and would stop along the way to see many sights.

She enjoyed crocheting and sewing clothes for her granddaughters, made many dolls, and enjoyed knitting sixteen Christmas stockings and quilting many baby quilts. She loved baking a variety of Christmas cookies, and she made the best pies.

She and George loved taking care of their great-granddaughter, Riley, and attended many of her sports and school activities. “Granny” also loved playing and snuggling with her great-great-granddaughters.

A private family graveside will be held at First Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 North Morton Street (U.S. 31 North), in Franklin is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of her beloved dog, Phoebe, to the Humane Society of Johnson County, 3827 Graham Road, Franklin, Indiana 46131.
