On paper at least, Edinburgh can stand with teams with a rich football pedigree like Center Grove and Roncalli, teams that traditionally start out fast and furious.

While Franklin’s fans could have easily been tempted to look ahead to next week’s rivalry clash with Whiteland, the Grizzly Cub players and coaches weren’t affording themselves that luxury. There was the nagging matter of Friday’s Mid-State Conference opener against a Perry Meridian team that handed the Grizzly Cubs a narrow defeat a year ago.

The Grace College women’s golf team opened its fall season by winning the 13-team Trine Invitational as senior Lucy Young, a Center Grove graduate, tied for second place among the individuals with a 79.

The gamble didn’t work, but the message was clear.

In high school volleyball, Center Grove has always been viewed as the team to beat, not only for county schools, but other state teams.
